An Australian fashion advocacy group is calling for a complete ban on fur imports after tests revealed that a clothing item sold in Victoria contained cat fur — despite being labelled as faux fur or sheep’s wool.
The tests, conducted by Collective Fashion Justice, also found that two beanies purchased at Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market had pompoms made from fox and raccoon dog fur, though they were labelled as acrylic.

These findings have prompted renewed calls from animal welfare advocates and the Animal Justice Party for a statewide ban on the sale of all animal fur, alongside a blanket import ban. They argue that many consumers are unknowingly buying real fur produced under cruel conditions overseas.

Although Australia banned the import and export of cat and dog fur two decades ago, the Australian Border Force has reported no seizures since the law was introduced.

To avoid unknowingly purchasing real fur, experts advise consumers to check for telltale signs — such as wispy ends on the fur or skin backing, which differ from synthetic alternatives.

Cats and dogs are considered important companion animals, and the idea of using their fur is simply unacceptable.

If fur like this were imported under false labels such as wool or faux fur, it would likely cause a major public outcry.

However, I wonder whether there are actually any tests or systems in place to check what kind of fur is being used in fashion products.
To be honest, I’ve never heard of such inspections happening in Japan.

I think we, as consumers, need to pay attention to what materials our items are made from.

日本では、猫や犬の毛がファッションアイテムに使われることはまずありません。
犬や猫は、人間とともに暮らす大切なペットであり、その毛皮を利用するという発想自体が受け入れられにくいと感じます。

しかし、今回のように羊毛やフェイクファーと偽って、動物の毛皮が輸入・販売されていたとしたら、日本でもオーストラリアと同様、大きな問題になるはずです。
とはいえ、日本では実際に販売されている衣類に使われている毛が、本当に何の素材なのか、きちんと検査されているのかは疑問です。そういった検査体制や実態について、これまであまり聞いたことがありません。

私たちも消費者として素材表示を意識していく必要があるのかもしれません。
