Child Healthcare in Australia: What Families Need to Know / オーストラリア移住と子どもの医療：知っておきたい基本

When considering migration to Australia, one of the biggest concerns for families is: “What happens if my child gets sick?”

Just like adults, children first visit a GP (General Practitioner), but there are important differences compared to Japan. In this article, we’ll focus on insurance, immunisation, health checks, and emergency care, with a special look at differences from Japan.

オーストラリアに移住を考えるとき、多くの人が不安に思うのが「子どもが病気になったらどうするの？」ということです。

大人と同じように GP（家庭医）を入り口に医療を受けるのが基本ですが、子ども特有の事情や日本との違いもあります。この記事では、特に 保険・予防接種・健診・緊急時の対応 を中心に、日本との比較を交えながら紹介していきます。

In Australia, permanent residents and citizens can access the public health system, Medicare, free of charge. GP visits and public hospital care are generally covered.
オーストラリアの公的医療制度「Medicare」は、永住権や市民権を持っている人なら無料で利用できます。公立病院や GP での診察料は基本的にカバーされるので、子どもの診察も安心です。

For temporary residents (work visa, student visa, etc.), enrolling in OVHC (Overseas Visitor Health Cover) or OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is required. Choosing a family cover plan ensures children are also included.
一方、就労ビザや留学ビザなどで一時的に滞在する場合は、OVHC（Overseas Visitor Health Cover）や OSHC（Overseas Student Health Cover） に加入する必要があります。このとき、保険は「ファミリータイプ（Family cover）」を選べば、子どもも一緒にカバーされます。

However, the scope of coverage varies—some plans may exclude dental, maternity, or inpatient costs. Always check the details carefully before purchasing your policy.
ただしプランによっては、「小児歯科」「産科」「入院時の費用」などが対象外になる場合もあるため、契約前に補償範囲をよく確認しておくことが大切です。

Australia runs the National Immunisation Program (NIP), which provides age-appropriate vaccines free of charge. Vaccines such as rotavirus and meningococcal, which may be self-funded in Japan, are included.
オーストラリアでは National Immunisation Program (NIP) により、定められた年齢で受けるワクチンは原則無料です。ロタウイルスや髄膜炎菌ワクチンなど、日本では自費になることもあるものが全国的にカバーされています。

Schedules differ from Japan. Immunisation records from Japan must be translated into English and submitted so they can be registered in the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR). These records are also required for school or childcare enrolment.
一方で、日本との接種スケジュールは異なります。日本で接種した分はそのままオーストラリアの記録に移せないため、母子手帳や予防接種記録を英語に翻訳して提出する必要があります。提出が完了すると「Australian Immunisation Register（AIR）」に記録され、学校入学や保育園入園時に必要な証明として利用されます。

Almost all Australian states follow the “No Jab, No Play” rule: children who are not vaccinated cannot attend childcare or kindergarten.
オーストラリアのほぼすべての州では 予防接種を受けていない子どもは原則として保育園や幼稚園に通えない という”No Jab, No Play“方針があります。

• Proof of vaccination via AIR is mandatory for enrolment.
  入園時に AIR の接種証明が必須
• Exemptions are granted only for medical reasons, not for religious or personal beliefs.
  医学的な理由以外の未接種（宗教や親の判断）は認められない

Migrant families must translate Immunisation records, submit them, and arrange catch-up vaccinations if needed.

In Japan, regular check-ups are scheduled at specific ages (1 month, 3 months, 18 months, etc.) via the maternal and child health handbook.In Australia, health checks are fewer and handled by GPs or Child Health Nurses.
日本では母子手帳に沿って、1か月健診・3か月健診・1歳半健診など、細かく定期健診があります。オーストラリアでも子どもの健診制度はありますが、基本的には GP や「Child Health Nurse」が担当し、日本ほど頻繁ではありません。

Parents are encouraged to actively raise concerns about growth and development rather than relying solely on fixed scheduled visits.
発達や健康に関するチェックはあるものの、日本のように「必ず決まった月齢ごとの健診がある」わけではなく、親が気になることを相談して進めていく形です。

Children often become ill suddenly. In Australia, families can access:
子どもは発熱やケガなど、急に体調を崩すことが多いもの。オーストラリアでの緊急時の選択肢は次の通りです

• Emergency Department (ER): Public hospitals, open 24/7. Free under Medicare; covered by insurance for temporary residents.
  緊急外来：公立病院に併設され、24時間対応しています。重症の場合や夜間の急病はこちらになります。Medicare があれば無料、一時滞在者は保険の範囲内でカバーすることになります。
• After-hours GP: Evening and weekend services, sometimes offering home visits.
  時間外診療：夜間や休日も診てくれる GP サービス。地域によっては往診もあります。
• Dial 000: For life-threatening emergencies. Ambulances may incur charges, so check if your insurance covers this.
  緊急通報「000」：命に関わる場合は「000」へ。救急車は有料となる場合があるため、保険でカバーされるか事前確認が必要です。

Child healthcare in Australia is built on the same system as for adults, but key differences lie in insurance, immunisation, health checks, and emergency care.
オーストラリアでの子どもの医療は、大人と同じ仕組みを基本としながらも、保険・予防接種・健診・緊急時対応に大きな違いがあります。
